21 Books By Women Authors to Add to Read in 2021

Reading more is usually at the top of many people’s To Do or New Year’s Resolution List. I’ve always been an avid reader and love getting lost in a good story.. both fiction and non-fiction. If reading more is on your to-do list, I’ve rounded up 21 books you should consider adding to your reading list this year.

The best part?

They’re all by women authors. :-)

NONFICTION

  1. More than Enough x Elaine Welteroth- This was probably one of my favorite books that I read last year. Elaine’s story is so inspiring and it’ll give you the perfect push you need to kick off your year!

  2. Becoming x Michelle Obama- If you haven’t already, run to read this! My forever first lady gives such good insight on not only her experience in the White House, but also how she managed being a working mama and wife.

  3. Daring Greatly x Brene Brown- Big fan of Brene Brown also. In this book she discusses how being vulnerable can actually be a strength.

  4. Lead from the Outside x Stacey Abrams- What’s not to love about Stacey Abrams?! I haven’t read this one but it’s on my list for next month!

  5. Clever Girl Finance x Bola Sokunbi - While personal finance books are no substitute for actual financial planning, they are a great starting point. I haven’t read this one yet but I love the information she provides on Instagram. I’m looking forward to diving in!

  6. Fervent x Priscilla Shirer - I read this book a few years ago when my prayer life needed an upheaval. The book outlines actionable, easy to digest ways to be more strategic with your prayers.

  7. Mistakes I Made at Work x Jessica Bacal- This is actually a collection of short stories by a number of influential women. It’s super inspiring if you’re looking to advance at work or if you deal with issues of perfectionism.

  8. Secrets of Six-Figure Women x Barbara Stanny - I’ve mentioned this one a few times on my Instagram, but I’m sharing it here because it’s so good! The book discusses common pitfalls that prevent women from earning what they should.

  9. Untamed x Glennon Doyle - I also haven’t read this one but I’m so excited to start this memoir about empowerment and motherhood.

  10. Taking Sexy Back x Alexandra Solomon- I’ll be the first to admit that finding my “sexy” after motherhood has been a challenge for me. While this isn’t a book specifically for mamas, it’s high on my list for the promise of of learning how to reconnect with myself.

  11. We’re Going to Need More Wine x Gabrielle Union- I loved reading Gabrielle Union’s collection of essays about her life. It’s honest, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking.

FICTION

  1. Homegoing- Yaa Gyasi- I will forever sign Yaa Gyasi’s praises after reading this book. I couldn’t put it down. It’s a novel that follow two sisters and their lineage spanning over 300 years, and it reminded me how much I enjoy fiction.

  2. Transcendent Kingdom x Yaa Gyasi- I’m clearly a fan of Yaa Gyasi, but haven’t read her newest novel. It’s definitely on the list this year!

  3. Such a Fun Age x Kiley Reid - An interesting coming of age story about love, family and relationships. I didn’t like how it ended…only because I wanted more!

  4. American Dirt x Jeanine Cummins- Another book I haven’t read, but the premise is about an immigrant mother and her son and their struggle to flee cartel violence.

  5. The Perfect Find x Tia Williams- A super cute novel about love and starting over. It’s perfect for a book club with plenty of wine!

  6. The Vanishing Half x Brit Bennett- This was on my list for last year and I didn’t get to. So I’m adding it again for this year. It’s a story about twin sisters, growing up in the deep south and running away in their teen years. The story follows them and their separate lives.

  7. Where the Crawdads Sing x Delia Owens- Another coming of age story but with a bit more complexity. It will annoy you at times but is definitely worth the read.

  8. Americanah x Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - One of my adult favorites. It’s a story about race and identity but with humor and a much more modern feel.

  9. It’s Not All Downhill from Here x Terry McMillan - I grew up reading all my mama’s Terry McMillan books in the 90s so I’m excited to read her new novel as an adult.

  10. The Sun is Also A Star x Nocola Yoon - I secretly enjoy Young Adult fiction and movies. If you’ve seen and enjoyed the movie with Yara Shahidi, you’ll love the book!
